The first All-Russian Summer Forum “RUSSIA – A COUNTRY OF SCIENTISTS. YOUNG MEDICINE” has concluded in Moscow. Participants received new support measures, access to valuable resources, and unique opportunities to advance their scientific careers and promote their innovations.
The Forum, held from June 23 to 26, was organized by the International Foundation for the Development of Biomedical Technologies named after V.P. Filatov, with support from the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the Presidential Grants Foundation, and the Council of Young Scientists of the Ministry of Health of Russia. The Forum is part of the large-scale project “YOUNG MEDICINE” initiated by the V.P. Filatov Foundation.
“Those within our orbit are granted access to unique opportunities and resources. We offer mentorship and support for project development. This year,
at the request of the Federation Council, we established the Committee for Scientific and Practical Expertise and launched programs for project refinement. We facilitate access to cutting-edge medical equipment, laboratories, industrial platforms, and institutes of translational medicine. This is essential support at the beginning of a scientific career,”
– commented Ekaterina Dibrova, President of the V.P. Filatov International Foundation for the Development of Biomedical Technologies.
Vyacheslav Shulenin, General Director of the Moscow Center for Innovative Technologies in Healthcare, also expressed his support for the 50 young medical scientists from all federal districts of Russia:
“I’m truly glad to see you here today. We have many exciting projects and, of course, would like to invite you for internships. We would be happy to welcome you in the companies of our residents – those who want to make a real impact and develop the medicine of the future together with us,” – said Shulenin.
Leadership of “MedTech” Met with Participants of the Forum at the Public Talk “Science Begins With You”. As part of the Forum, the Head of “MedTech” met with participants during the public talk “Science Begins With You”. Following the event, it was announced that 20 participants of the “YOUNG MEDICINE” project will receive expert consultations from “MedTech”, and 9 participants will undergo paid internships at companies that are residents of the “MedTech” innovation ecosystem.
The National University of Science and Technology MISIS (NUST MISIS) also expressed readiness to collaborate with the “YOUNG MEDICINE” project. The university hosted one of the Forum’s events and invited young scientists for a three-day internship in their laboratories, where internationally recognized innovations have been developed. During this internship, participants will have the opportunity to synthesize bioresorbable materials for regenerative medicine, create tissue-engineered constructs (scaffolds + living cells), and gain experience in bioprinting.
Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISIS, Doctor of Economics, Professor, met with the Forum participants and invited them to take part in the university’s key scientific initiatives.
On the sidelines of the International Forum “PREVENTMED”, which also welcomed young scientists, Oksana Drapkina — Chief Freelance Specialist in Therapy and General Medical Practice of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Director of the National Medical Research Center for Therapy and Preventive Medicine (NMRCTPM), Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Scientific Curator of the “YOUNG MEDICINE” project — outlined areas of collaboration with the Foundation.
Researchers and physicians of the NMRCTPM are part of the expert team of the “YOUNG MEDICINE” project and actively participate in the selection and evaluation of the competing projects.
“Another important task of the project is the creation of a scientific environment that fosters the most productive work of young researchers. The exchange of knowledge and experience between young scientists and their more experienced colleagues contributes to the development of Russian medicine and science as a whole. Creating a platform for presenting scientific developments and innovative ideas is one of the project’s key priorities,” – said Oksana Drapkina.
Five Projects Presented at Pitch Session “From Idea to Implementation: Success Stories”. As part of the scientific pitch session “From Idea to Implementation: Success Stories of Developers”, Vitaly Omelyanovsky, General Director of the Center for Expertise and Quality Control of Medical Care (CEQCMC) of the Russian Ministry of Health, analyzed five projects from participants of the Summer Forum. He spoke about the intricacies of bringing innovations to the medical market and expressed full support for the “YOUNG MEDICINE” project.
Olga Sobchenko, Managing Partner of CKK S-GROUP and Editor-in-Chief of the PharmMedProm portal, emphasized the importance of soft skills for developers working to implement medical innovations. She also outlined the key growth drivers for scientific projects.
Additional insights into successful project implementation were provided by:
Alexander Garmash, Director of the Engineering and Physical Institute of Biomedicine at MEPhI,
Fyodor Senatov, Director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at MISIS,
Alyona Fadeeva, Senior Project Manager at the Skolkovo Foundation.
In addition to the scientific agenda, a sports session was organized under the initiative “Movement as Natural Medicine”, led by Boris Polyaev — Chief Freelance Specialist in Sports Medicine of the Russian Ministry of Health, Head of the Department of Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, and Physical Culture at Pirogov University, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor.
The All-Russian Summer Forum “YOUNG MEDICINE” will become
an annual event, according to the organizers. Despite the significant number of innovative medical projects being developed, only 10% make it to actual implementation, and just 7–9% are adopted into routine clinical practice. The V.P. Filatov Foundation is committed to improving these figures.
This year, the main event of the “YOUNG MEDICINE” initiative will also take place. Applications are being accepted until October 31. The selection of the most practice-oriented, applied, product-focused, and technological projects will be conducted through the “YOUNG MEDICINE” International Scientific School Competition and the Forum of the same name. In 2024, the Forum attracted over 500 young scientists. More than 1,000 applications were submitted to the competition from 52 Russian regions, as well as from Belarus, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.
